Growatt MOD 15KTL3-HU – 3-phase hybrid with built-in backup (15 kW)
You want a powerful, quiet inverter that can both work with an HV battery and continue to power the house in the event of an outage? Then the Growatt MOD 15KTL3-HU is exactly the type we like. This HU variant simply has its backup (EPS) on board. No separate box, less cabling, faster.
For the installer it feels logical: fanless (so quiet), IP66 (outdoors, under a canopy okay), and with clear menus for control and monitoring.
How does it work in practice?
During the day, the panels go through the inverter to your consumption, the surplus charges your APX battery system. At night or during peaks, the HU delivers from the battery back into your home. If the grid fails, the HU switches to emergency operation at lightning speed and keeps your selected groups on as usual.
Think router, lights, fridge-the rest you leave on the grid. This way, comfort remains intact without adding unnecessary complexity to your installation.
Smart design (short & sweet)
-
MPP trackers: divide east/west or shade areas per tracker. Target your string voltage around the centre of the MPP range; this way it performs stably in cold and heat.
-
Battery choice: scale your APX battery system to your purpose. Roughly calculate with your evening/night consumption and desired backup duration; rather a slightly larger stack than regret.
-
Smart Meter: place the 3-phase energy meter directly at the grid input and couple via RS485. Without meter, no tight export-limiting and no smart battery logic.
-
Phase balance: distribute heavy consumers over the phases. In back-up, you mainly want to include the essential groups; heavy peak consumers only if your battery power allows.
-
AC side: choose circuit breaker/load breaker according to capacity and standard; ensure neat wire ends, earthing plan and labelling.
-
DC side: pinch MC4/H4 connectors watertight with MC4 pliers, check cable cross-section and route length, check clamping forces.
Installation in five steps
-
Mounting: vertical, out of direct solar and spray water; free space for natural convection.
-
AC connection: 3-phase 230/400 V, earthing and labelling.
-
DC connection: 1 string per tracker. Observe polarity during installation!
-
Smart Meter: placed between grid and meter box, RS485 to inverter.
-
Commissioning: select Load first, Battery first or Grid first via display/app, test backup and check phase balance.
