The isolator switch is installed between the meter cupboard and the inverter so that the inverter can be safely disconnected from the grid.
Under the new NEN1010 it is mandatory for installers to fit an isolator switch near the inverter, so that you can work on the inverter safely when necessary. This is particularly important when several people are working on the system, or when the inverter is a long way from the distribution board.
Please note! Once you have fitted the isolator switch, make sure you do not switch the earth cable along with it.
Why an isolator switch for solar panels is mandatory
Since NEN 1010, there has to be a switch between the inverter and the meter cupboard that lets you separate the inverter from the grid in a single action. That isolator switch for solar panels means an installer, a firefighter or you yourself does not first have to work out the whole meter cupboard before the installation can be worked on safely.
This ABB version is surface-mounted and in dark grey, so it does not look out of place next to an inverter in a shed or garage. The switch is operated with a quarter turn and its position can be read from a distance.
Fitting in practice
- As close to the inverter as possible. That is where someone needs it.
- At eye level and accessible. Not behind a cupboard, not above a workbench full of things.
- Clearly marked. Add a label, so it is immediately clear that this is the isolator switch for solar panels and not just any circuit.
- The right poles. With single-phase you switch line and neutral, with three-phase all phases and the neutral.
